A journey into Medieval Kilkenny

Take a tour of our Cathedral with one of our expert guides and hear all about how the Cathedral has been part of Kilkenny’s history for over 800 years.

St Canice’s Cathedral has been an important site of Christian worship since the 6th Century. For both pilgrim and tourist alike, the Cathedral remains both a hallowed place, and one of significant historical interest. Additionally, St Canice’s is the mother church of a bishopric which includes six dioceses and eight counties.

One of the only two round towers in the country that people may climb, the round tower at St Canice’s Cathedral provides a magnificent view of Kilkenny and the surrounding area on a clear day.

Discover one of Ireland’s most remarkable historical treasures, The Red Book of Ossory, now on public display at St Canice’s Cathedral—almost 700 years after it was first written. This immersive exhibition brings medieval Kilkenny to life, offering a rare glimpse into the daily lives, beliefs, and stories of its people. Having survived centuries of upheaval—from wars to plagues—the manuscript stands as a powerful link to the past. Within its pages, you’ll find the earliest recorded recipe for Aqua Vitae (the precursor to Irish whiskey), alongside poems, songs, early references to the Magna Carta, and even a letter from King Edward III reflecting on life in medieval Ireland.
