FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the Kilkenny Whiskey Guild?

The Kilkenny Whiskey Guild is a collective of 11 establishments in Kilkenny City, each offering a curated collection of at least 60 Irish whiskeys. Together, we celebrate Kilkenny’s 700-year connection to Irish distilling history, offering tastings, tours, monthly events, and authentic Irish whiskey hospitality.

  • Why is Kilkenny important to Irish whiskey history?

Kilkenny is home to the Red Book of Ossory (c1324), which contains Ireland’s earliest written reference to distillation. The Guild honours this heritage by blending centuries of tradition with today’s world-class hospitality.

  • Do I need to be a whiskey expert to join an experience?

Not at all. Our experiences are designed for everyone; from first-timers to seasoned enthusiasts. Our guides make each tasting engaging, approachable, and fun.

  • How do I book an experience or event?

Bookings can be made directly on our website. Simply choose your preferred date to see available experiences or monthly events, then confirm your spot online.

  • Are your experiences suitable for groups or corporate bookings?

Yes. We welcome groups of all sizes and can tailor experiences for corporate visits, private tours, and special occasions.

  • What happens at the monthly events?

Our monthly events bring whiskey lovers together in Kilkenny’s medieval heart. Expect whiskey tastings, food pairings, guest distillers, and social evenings with fellow enthusiasts.

  • Is there an age restriction for experiences?

Yes. Guests must be 18 years or older to participate in whiskey tastings. Younger guests may join walking tours but cannot take part in tastings.

  • Do I need to book in advance?

We strongly recommend booking ahead, as experiences and events often sell out quickly, especially during weekends, festivals, and peak tourist seasons.

  • What should I bring or wear to an experience?

Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended for walking tours. For tastings and events, smart-casual attire is perfect.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations made up to 48 hours before the experience receive a full refund. Within 48 hours, bookings are non-refundable.

  • Where is the Guild located?

The Guild is based in Kilkenny City, Ireland’s medieval capital. Each of our 11 houses is within easy walking distance of the city centre.

  • What else can I do while visiting Kilkenny?

Beyond whiskey, Kilkenny offers a wealth of attractions including Kilkenny Castle, St. Canice’s Cathedral and Round Tower, The Medieval Mile Museum, Rothe House & Gardens, Butler Gallery, vibrant festivals all year round, live music nightly, and a thriving food scene. In the locality there is also Jerpoint Abbey, Dunmore Caves and Castlecomer Discovery Park; lots for everyone to explore while in Kilkenny!

  • Are your experiences and website accessible?

Yes. Our website meets WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility standards. Many of our experiences are accessible, though facilities vary by venue. Please check individual listings or contact us directly so we can help accommodate your needs.
